This is an attachment for your Manus or Country hand mill so you can use the power of your legs instead of your arms.
The pedal does not spin the mill any faster than milling by hand (ie. there is no gearing increase), but it is much easier to pedal at a sustained high rate than it is to hand crank.
It is built here in our shop in Iowa. It is all steel construction and very tough. It is not fancy, but it is functional. One of the things we are proud of is the compactness and portability and simplicity. This is largely due to the use of the shaft drive system. When disassembled, it takes up very little space for transport or storage. Even when fully assembled, it doesn't take up much space. Assembled dimensions with the mill (no funnel) are 38"L x 15 1/2H" x 18 1/2W".
PLEASE NOTE: It takes a fair amount of force to mill grain, so the attachment will move around unless it is firmly mounted or stabilized. The legs are pre-drilled for you. A few suggestions are:
- Screw it directly to the floor (in a basement, porch or deck)
- Attach the rear leg to a piece of plywood or other flat material that sits under the chair you are sitting on. Your weight will hold it in place
- Have your kids stand on the legs or frame while you mill
- Use your own ingenuity and come up with a great method that works for you!
Also note that often it is more comfortable to sit on a stool than a chair as you are above the pedals in a more bike-like position.
Because of the way the mill is mounted to the frame, we are packaging the attachment with the Manus mill (save $30 on the combo). With the Country, you have to drill two holes through the wooden trim piece (although it can be done).
